How the apps, coins, tropes and platforms actually work — evergreen explainers for new and lapsed viewers.
These are the evergreen explainers: how coins work, what a pack actually buys, what each subscription tier does and does not include, and how to cancel one on each platform. They exist because the apps are precise about the price of a coin bundle and vague about everything that turns coins into a finished series.
Every dollar figure in this section comes from one of two places — the in-app purchase tiers Apple publishes for that app, or figures the platform supplied to us — and each guide names which, with the date it was read. Where a coin-per-episode rate is modelled rather than observed, the guide says the word "modelled" next to it.

Apple lists three DramaBox top-up tiers — $4.99, $9.99, $19.99 — and no rung is cheaper per coin. Seven of its ten listings are Membership, four at that same $19.99.
ReadGrinding ads and check-ins, a median ReelShort series finishes in about ten days and a median ShortMax series in about four weeks. For the other four apps we can't compute it at all — two lack the series length, one lacks the daily rate, one lacks both.
ReadWe read the paywall position off NetShort's own series pages for all 721 series: a median of 8 free episodes, range 1 to 59, always one unbroken run from episode 1 — and not a single series that runs free to the end.
ReadEvery short-drama app has two different scores: Apple's own store rating, from 2,136,990 raters (4.49–4.90), and our average of the 2,839 written reviews Apple's feed returns (3.08–4.45). They rank the six apps differently — here are both, side by side, with the gap explained.
ReadNo app prices by the hour. NetShort's 157-second first episode is the only in-app duration we hold, so it is the only cost-per-hour we can build: about $13.64.
ReadDramaBox is a real app with real licensed shows, billed through Apple. The catch isn't fraud: its 4.76 store rating and its written reviews, averaging 3.21, describe two different apps.
ReadGoodShort is real, transparent about coin prices, and rated 4.90 by half a million people. One duplicated five-star review in our sample says the quiet part out loud: the stars were for bonus coins.
ReadReelShort is real, and unusually checkable: it publishes its paywall position on every series page, and its free YouTube batches match those numbers in 32 of the 35 series we could verify — the app never gave less.
ReadShortMax is legitimate and unusually generous on YouTube, where it posts whole dramas free. Inside the app, we read the paywall on 401 of its 402 series: not one is free to the finish.
ReadApple lists five ShortMax subscriptions all called Weekly Pass Pro, at $9.99 and $19.99. Whether the pass beats coins flips on a number nobody publishes — both answers, and which assumption produces each.
ReadApple lists three separate ReelShort subscriptions and prices all three at $19.99 — without stating what any of them unlocks. Sourced math on what that is worth as a ceiling, why the monthly figure is $86.62 rather than $79.96, and the 108 series that never charge at all.
ReadGoodShort sells four things called Weekly VIP at three different prices, plus a fifth recurring entry. Find which one has your card, cancel it at the store, and — uniquely among these apps — verify what you were actually paying per episode.
ReadApple lists seven recurring NetShort entries at three price points and calls every one of them Weekly VIP. Find the one billing you, cancel it at the store, and understand why NetShort is the one app whose per-episode cost cannot be calculated at all.
ReadAll six are free to install; none is free to finish, with one provable exception. The daily free-unlock rate runs from one episode to nearly seven depending on the app — and the cheapest coins are not the cheapest episodes.
