Is ReelShort Free? What's Free, What Isn't, How to Cancel
ReelShort is free to install and free to start. For all 766 series we catalogue we can show exactly where free stops: 14% never charge at all, the rest open with a median of 10 free episodes.

The short answer
ReelShort is free to install, free to open an account on, and free to start watching. Whether you can finish a given series without paying depends entirely on which series you pick — and for the first time, we can show you the split instead of shrugging at it.
We read the paywall position directly off ReelShort’s own series pages, for all 766 ReelShort series in our catalogue. Each page states the episode a series’ paywall starts at, plus a separate paid/free flag; the two agree on every one of them — no conflicts. Here’s what that shows:
- 108 of the 766 — 14% — are free from the first episode to the last. Nothing to unlock anywhere in the run. These series range from 27 to 117 episodes. (This page used to say 89 of 354, a quarter. The catalogue behind that reading covered only part of ReelShort’s shelf; completing it on 2 September 2026 added 412 series with just 20 fully-free ones among them.)
- The other 658 open with a run of free episodes, then start charging. The free run is 2 to 23 episodes, median 10.
- On those 658, what’s left to pay for is 7 episodes at the very least — median 52, and as many as 214.
Two of those, for a sense of scale: Darling, Please Come Home runs all 82 episodes free. Big Bad Husband, Please Wake Up! opens with 3 free episodes, then gates the remaining 101.
Read the limits into that 14% before you repeat it. It covers every ReelShort series we hold, which is not the same as ReelShort’s whole library — the platform lists more than we catalogue. A platform can also move any of these numbers whenever it wants. What we have is a real, dated snapshot of a specific set of series, not a permanent rule about the app.
One comparison worth carrying with you. ShortMax publishes its paywall position too, and we now hold it for 401 of the 402 ShortMax series we catalogue. Its free openings are the same length as ReelShort’s — a median of 10 episodes — but not a single one of those 401 runs free to the end. The generous-looking part of the experience is identical on both; the part that matters, whether the free run ever reaches the finale, is where they split.
What it costs once the free run ends
We now have real numbers for this too, not a placeholder. Apple’s US App Store listing for ReelShort (checked 19 August 2026) shows a $4.99 one-time purchase — the pricing sheet supplied to us separately states that buys 500 coins, and the two agree, which is why we treat that one figure as reported rather than modelled. Apple’s other one-time tiers run $9.99, $14.99, $19.99, $24.99 and $29.99; nobody has told us how many coins those buy, so we work it back using the rate GoodShort’s own App Store page confirms directly across five tiers ($0.00998 per coin), which lands them at roughly 1,000, 1,500, 2,000, 2,500 and 3,000 coins. Prices are real; those coin counts are our model.
What an episode costs is still not something ReelShort publishes. We were told a $0.10–$0.70 per-episode range and no fixed figure inside it, so we model 60 coins — about $0.60 — near the top of that band, on the reasoning that per-episode prices in this category tend to climb as a series goes on. Treat it as a ceiling assumption, not an observed price.
Apple also lists a $19.99 subscription for ReelShort, with no billing period stated on the label itself. The pricing sheet we were given separately describes that same $19.99 as a weekly price and adds a $199/year annual option that doesn’t appear among Apple’s listed tiers. Nobody publishes what the subscription actually unlocks, so — because assuming unlimited viewing would make it look better than it might be — we model it at a cap of 2 episodes a day, the stricter of the two patterns reported to us elsewhere in this category. Fourteen episodes a week, at our modelled $0.60 rate, would cost about $8.38 bought as coins directly. ReelShort’s $19.99 weekly price runs about 2.4x that ceiling. Pay annually instead, at $199, and the monthly-equivalent drops to $16.58 — paying weekly for a year runs to roughly $1,039, over five times the annual price for what Apple’s listing implies is the same access.
None of this is inside-the-app pricing. It’s Apple’s US storefront, checked once, in August 2026, plus a model we built and labelled as one. It moves by region and by whatever promotion is running, so check your own account’s store screen before paying anything.
The free content ReelShort doesn’t put behind a paywall at all: its own YouTube channel
This is the part most “is ReelShort free” answers miss entirely. On 18 August 2026 we sampled ten official platform channels on YouTube — 2,974 videos, 88,296,607 combined views, with the runtime of every one of them measured. Here’s what free, official, full-episode content looks like on the three channels that actually publish it:
| Official channel | Free episode content in our sample | Measured runtime |
|---|---|---|
| ReelShort | 37 uploads titled [EP1-N], each batching episodes up to the number in its own title |
channel-wide median upload: 10m 36s |
| ShortMax (Watch Dramas & Show) | 78 uploads tagged [FULL], median 60,558 views (18 August 2026) |
median 87m 30s, ranging 49m 20s to 162m 1s — none shorter than 49 minutes |
| DramaBox English | 275 EP-numbered uploads covering 23 series (91.7% of titles parsed cleanly) | median 41m 27s, and not one of the 275 runs under 10 minutes |
ReelShort’s uploads carry the highest median view count of the ten channels we sampled: 34,737 across 300 videos posted in a 78-day window. The next channel down sits at 22,250, and the lowest at 445.
Updated 8 September 2026. The 275 above is our 18 August 2026 reading, and it was capped by how we collected rather than by the channel: we pulled the 300 most recent uploads per channel, which is one API page. A wider pass on 1 September went further back — 3,385 uploads across the same ten channels — and found 406 videos on Drama Box English, 375 of them carrying an episode number. Those 375 run a median of 41 minutes 33 seconds, from 22 minutes 44 seconds to 86 minutes 43 seconds, and not one is under 20 minutes. The August figures above are left as published; 375 is the current count. What that number does and does not promise is in DramaBox free episodes.
Three hard limits on reading that table:
The N in [EP1-N] and the free-episode count on the series page are two separate sources — and we have tested whether they match, most recently on 3 September 2026 against our expanded catalogue. Of the 37 batch uploads, 35 match a series we hold; 32 of those agree with the series page’s figure exactly, 3 show the app giving more, and the app never gives fewer than the YouTube batch shows. They started as two different facts; they now confirm each other in every case we could check.
Median views measure YouTube promotion, not app economics. The sampling windows also differ per channel — 41 to 917 days across the ten — so the medians aren’t cleanly comparable with each other.
These uploads are not all the same kind of video. DramaBox English’s 23 series run to a median of 41 minutes per upload — that looks like conventional long-form drama, not vertical shorts. We have no reliable per-episode duration figure for ReelShort or anyone else, so we won’t tell you an episode runs a minute or two — nothing we measured supports that claim.
How to filter ReelShort’s channel down to actual episodes
Of ReelShort’s uploads in our sample, 30.3% are preview or metadata clips rather than watchable episode content. The channel is worth using — but you have to filter it.
- Search the channel for
EP1. All 37 batch uploads carry[EP1-N]in the title. That one string separates batches from clips faster than scrolling does. - Use runtime. We counted anything under three minutes as a clip; ReelShort’s channel-wide median upload is 10 minutes 36 seconds.
- Treat view count as a weak signal only. Across our whole 2,974-video corpus, the 753 uploads under three minutes had a median of 1,467 views against 4,153 for the 2,221 full-episode uploads — a gap of roughly 2.8x, corpus-wide rather than measured on ReelShort’s channel alone.
If your goal is a specific title rather than sampling openings, check that title’s page on our ReelShort catalogue first — for every one of the 766 series listed there we already know whether it’s fully free, and if not, how many episodes are. For the general case, we keep a running guide to free and legal ways to watch, and a deeper breakdown of how the coin system actually works.
Cancelling: where the money actually leaks
If you subscribed to anything and want out, this is the part that matters, and it’s where most people lose money.
Deleting the app does not cancel a subscription. Deleting your ReelShort account does not cancel it either. The recurring charge is a contract between you and whoever processed the payment — Apple, Google, or a card processor on the web. The app isn’t in that loop, so removing your account leaves the renewal firing on schedule.
Cancel through the channel you paid through:
- iOS / iPadOS: Settings → Apple ID → Subscriptions.
- Android: Play Store → Payments & subscriptions.
- Web or card: managed in your account on the site you signed up on. Neither Apple nor Google will show it.
A subscription bought on an iPhone is invisible in the Play Store, and the reverse holds too. Cancelling stops the next renewal; it doesn’t end today’s access, and coin purchases are one-off consumables that a subscription cancellation doesn’t touch. Quick answers
Is ReelShort free to download? Yes. Nothing to pay to install or register.
Is ReelShort free to watch? It depends on the series. Across all 766 we catalogue, 14% run free start to finish; the rest open with a median of 10 free episodes before charging.
Can I finish a whole series without paying? For 108 of the 766, yes — the whole thing is free. For the other 658, no: at least 7 more episodes sit behind the paywall and typically 52, and we model roughly $0.60 per episode against them.
Is there any fully free official ReelShort content beyond specific free series? Yes — 37 batch uploads on its official YouTube channel, in our 300-video sample.
Do the YouTube batches match the in-app free-episode count for the same series? Yes, wherever we could check. Of the 37 batch uploads, 35 match a series in our catalogue; 32 of those agree exactly with the app’s published free-episode count, 3 show the app giving more, and none show it giving less. Read the YouTube N as a floor for the in-app free run.
How we checked
Two separate collections feed this page. The YouTube figures come from the 300 most recent uploads on each of ten official platform channels (274 for one that has stopped posting), 2,974 videos total, collected 18 August 2026 with the runtime of each one measured; anything under three minutes counts as a clip. The free-episode figures come from ReelShort’s own series pages, reading the paywall position and a separate paid/free flag off each page on 19 August and 2 September 2026 — the two agree on all 766 series we hold. The ShortMax comparison comes from that platform’s own episode lists, read on 30 August 2026, which mark each episode locked or unlocked.
Both are snapshots, not permanent facts. Channels remove videos; platforms move paywalls. No price on this page comes from inside the ReelShort app — it’s Apple’s US storefront listing plus a model we built and labelled as ours.
